secret’s out - my william obsession

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

For years - at least 15 of them - I have wanted to write about William the Conqueror. I have read several biographies in French and English, articles galore, histories of England and Normandy, and even some pretty awful novels about him.

Today something remarkable happened. Given my ever hopeful spirit, despite a lifetime that has produced a lot of writing, but none of the “creative” sort, my subscription to Writers Digest (selected from that enterminable page of stickers sent by Publishers Clearinghouse along with my chance for a million dollars) arrived along with a certified letter from IRS. Having dealt with IRS’s little question, I turned to the magazine and then to its website, quickly learning that the ideal sentence is about 40 words and one should try to write 3 or 4 pages a day. Question - how many 40 word sentences make a page. Maybe they’ll say if I read to page 6. Hmmm.

WEll, since I have this blog space, am going to just start. According to the magazine, 70% of what I write as a first draft will be bad, I simply won’t worry, although if you like any of it would be glad to hear about it. I can always edit. We’ll see.

Think I’ll check out page 7. More later.
